Getting Stains Out of Your Carpet

Accidents happen in every home and that means from time to time you’re going to spill something on your carpet that leaves a stain.  If you have pets or children in your home it will happen regularly.  It is not the end of the world most stains can be removed if treated right away.  Getting stains out of your carpet isn’t difficult, let us show you how.

Be Prepared

While you should have your carpets cleaned on a regular basis, you may not be able to call someone in every time juice gets spilled.  There are a couple of things that you should have on hand in case of emergencies.  You are going to need a couple of absorbent towels, some white vinegar, mild detergent and some carpet cleaning solution that you can probably get from a carpet cleaning company.  Before you ever try and treat a stain in the middle of your living room do a test patch on an out of the way place to make sure it doesn’t damage the carpet.  Now let’s look at how to treat the most common stains.

First Things First

The first thing you want to do when something spills on the carpet is to blot the area with an absorbent towel to clean up the excess liquid.  You may want to add soapy water to the stain to dilute and lift it.  If you try this method then start from the outside of the stain and work your way into the center, that will stop the stain from spreading.

Spilled Liquids

The most common stains come from spilled drinks on the carpet and they can be anything from wine to coffee or tea.  You need to start by blotting up the excess liquid with a towel.  You can use a solution of vinegar or detergent a little bit at a time while blotting to lift the stain.  If you can’t get stains our properly it can be a good idea to call a carpet cleaning service to help instead. Here is a look at getting coffee stains from the carpet.

Food Stains

Next up on the list are food stains and again that can be anything.  Grab a common butter knife to lift up any excess food and remove it.  Now you want to grab a solution with a mild detergent and start from the outside and work your way to the inside.  You want to keep blotting as you add the detergent, never scrub that will only make the stain worse and spread it over a bigger area.

Sometimes it isn’t easy to remove a stain, in which case it is probably best to bring in some professional carpet cleaners to take care of stain for you before you damage the carpet.
